Last week, the legendary rapper Juvenile brought his high-energy performance to Memphis, delivering a show that fans won't soon forget. The crowd erupted as he took the stage, bringing the nostalgia of the late '90s and early 2000s with hits like 'Back That Azz Up' and 'Slow Motion.' His seamless blend of old-school classics and newer tracks kept the energy high throughout the night, proving that Juvenile's influence in hip-hop remains as strong as ever. Memphis, a city with a rich musical history, was the perfect backdrop for this unforgettable night of Southern rap at its finest.

Memphis, TN is no stranger to extreme temperatures during its Summer months. On August 3rd 2011, the grind city recorded one of its hottest days in history as temperatures scorched their way to 106 degrees!! When dealing with severe heat, it’s important to take precautions such as limiting your time outside, drinking plenty of fluids, & checking on the elderly. However on a day like August 15th, 2024, a different variation of heat wave came to Memphis in the form of Legendary Rapper Juvenile, Mannie Fresh, & The 400 Degrees Band. Over 1,000 patrons attended the concert at Minglewood Hall which happens to be one of Memphis’ best venues for concerts and events. Minglewood Hall is a smaller facility in comparison to FedEx Forum or Landers Center, but it still gives you an arena feel. I was in attendance working with Bumpin 96.3FM (Memphis’ only radio station for throwback hitz). While working the Bumpin 96.3 table, I was privileged to witness pre-show excitement from concert goers as they filed into the building. “Can I take a picture in front of your backdrop?” was the most asked question from Juvie fans as they requested to take photos in front of the Bumpin 96.3FM backdrop. The atmosphere was that of a class reunion. Everyone in attendance was there for the same cause. Rarely is there a hiphop event taking place in the city with no hostility, no animosity, & no violence. This night was special! Last Summer, we all saw Juvenile & Mannie Fresh perform an epic Tiny Desk Concert with NPR. Needless to say fans in Memphis have been clamoring for the opportunity to experience this LIVE.
First out is Mannie Fresh who is notoriously known as Cash Money’s heart and soul. There is something so relative about Mannie Fresh. He’s like everyone’s favorite uncle who always makes you laugh, and gives you great advice. His smile is infectious, and attendees cheered as he approached the stage entering the dj booth. While Mannie is famous for his multi-platinum production, & unforgettable lyrics, he is also a prolific dj. DJ Mannie was unofficially the opening act giving the crowd decades worth of vibes. Mannie Fresh mixed solid gold oldies with gritty southern rap classics and Memphis was definitely feeling that twang!! I noticed members of the 400 Degrees Band began making their way to the stage. Fresh did an excellent job of warming the crowd up, but now it was time for the main event.

Mannie then performed the intro from the 400 Degrees album and the crowd erupted as Juvenile ran to the middle of the stage. We all were excited to see Juvie perform. He has an unlimited amount of timeless hits. “Ha” was the first song at bat, and interestingly enough was the first Juvenile song I ever heard. Before the days of Apple Music, Spotify, and Youtube we had The Box (music box). The Box was a national music video channel on regular rabbit ears television where fans could pay a dollar or two to see their favorite artists music video. I remember being a pre-teen seeing the “Ha” video on the Box and being excited because everyone in the video looked just like they were from Memphis. New Orleans culture & fashion wasn’t too different from Memphis culture & fashion. Their hoods looked like our hoods, I felt the bond we shared which could be identified as southern poverty.

As Juvenile continued to run through bangers from the 6X Platinum 400 Degrees album, the Original Hotboy Turk emerged like a tornado onto the stage. Women were screaming like they were at a B2K concert! Juvenile embraced Turk and Mannie Fresh making me realize this may be the closest we get to a Hot Boyz Reunion Concert. B.G. has been home for a while after spending 12 years in prison but unfortunately he and Turk are currently at odds. I like and respect both of those brothers but this “beef” is causing millions of fans to suffer. B.G. & Turk’s fallout prevents us from what could possibly be the biggest reunion from a rap group in history. We have seen R&B group New Edition bury the hatchet, reunite, and rock stages all across the country, and the fans want the same for the Cash Money Hot Boyz.

In the middle of the show, Juvenile took a moment to shout out Mayor Paul Young who was in attendance. In all my years of living, I can’t recall being at the same rap concert as the Mayor of Memphis. It’s pretty dope actually, the thought of me sharing the same music taste as the mayor. After shouting out Mayor Paul Young, Juvenile brought out a surprise guest none other than Big 30!! I was excited to see Big 30 come out, as his primary message was “FREE POOH SHIESTY”. 30 spit a few bars from Pooh’s hit song “Get It Back In Blood” and the crowd recited the words back immediately. Being stamped in your city by legendary rappers is incredible for an artist’s brand. Juvenile followed the Big 30 interlude with more chart topping songs like “Slow Motion”, “In My Life”, & ultimately the most anticipated “Back That Ass Up”. Afterwards, Juvenile thanked his band, hype-men, dj, Turk, Mannie, & last but not least he thanked the city of Memphis for showing love to him over the last 25 years. The concert concluded with a meet and greet backstage where fans took photos with Juvenile & Turk. Juvenile took photos and chatted with Bumpin 96.3FM personalities & General Manager Tina Tilton. This night went down in history as the hottest recorded evening in Memphis. 400 Degrees
