Artist/Author Butta MD
Butta MD, whose real name Margaret Deloach, is naturally a writer. Her story begins in the heart of Memphis, where the streets pulse with music and culture. By age 9, Butta was falling in love with the sounds of MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Tupac, Lauryn Hill & India Arie. But rather than just listening, she was determined to carve out her own lane in the industry. Butta MD's vivid story telling stems from writing poetry as a form of self-expression during her youth. Her message continues to captivate audiences in the form of lyrical testimonies or in short her music. Her latest single “Remember” reveals some of her heaviest struggles. “Remember” is a motivational reminder not to go back to your old ways & to go forward with the plan God has for you. During the first verse she reflects on life altering instances like losing her sister & losing her job. Speaking on subjects like those lets you know she’s transparent & writes from a real place. Life can be tough, and Butta brings that same energy to her music.

Blending the city’s signature bass-heavy beats with a futuristic gospel sound, Butta MD’s truth searing flavor is entirely her own. Her music is full of energy, brimming with confidence, and laced with a raw honesty that resonated with me. It’s almost like she balances an aggressive delivery with smooth and catchy hooks. To me that showcases her versatility as an artist. One of her vibe worthy singles, ”It Will Be,” embodies her journey and message of God’s will. With lyrics that celebrate her strength as a God-fearing woman and as a rapper, the track serves as an anthem for anyone chasing their dreams while chasing salvation. The single & its music video directed by Vincent Price has gained momentum throughout the city and across streaming platforms, positioning Butta MD as an artist to watch in the Southern hip-hop/gospel scene.

While Memphis hip-hop has seen a resurgence of female rappers over the past few years, Butta MD stands out for her devotional authenticity. She isn’t playing into female rapper stereotypes or conforming to the “new norm”. Butta also isn’t afraid to tackle tough topics in her music, whether it's the hustle and grind required to make it in Memphis or overcoming sexuality strongholds. Her testimony is well documented, (see her book “Margaret's Survival Diary; GOD Restored My Story”) and she isn’t ashamed of the person God wants her to be. For many of us, God is our source of strength & assists us in the fight. Let’s not pretend our lives are perfect and we have room to judge people based on their past. Let’s also not pretend that we don’t all have challenges, battles, inner demons that we fight internal wars with. Butta is vocal about hers and the previous version of her that God continues to help her overcome.
What I admire most about Butta is her confidence and lyrical prowess, and the fact that she’s already inspiring the next generation to follow after righteousness. I first met Butta then “Ms. Butta” in 2009, as I was feeling my way around as a tv personality hosting a local public access show “City Beats”. Butta was a guest on the show as apart of “Majestic Entertainment” at the time was a local record label stocked with top indie talent. I think we were both trying to figure out how our respective industries work at the time. I was raw and rough around the edges, while Butta was a bit more reserved, polished, and nearing the finish line of a degree at the University of Memphis. 5 Years later, Butta MD & I relinked for a second interview this time on my platform. (BrinkTV on Comcast ch. 31 Memphis) Watching her evolution as an artist is impressive. Butta’s determination, skill, and love for the art form have already garnered her a loyal support system, and the buzz around her name continues to grow.
As Butta MD continues to rise, she’s not just representing God & herself — she’s representing Memphis, a city known for producing legends. And with her undeniable talent and relentless work ethic, she’s well on her way to becoming one herself.
Awesome article impressive journey keeping it real & true to self.
